Guess the Item in the Bag Baby Shower Game

Guessing games are always a hit at baby showers and they're a great way to get everyone involved. Here are some tried-and-tested ideas.

1. Guess the baby food

Buy 12 jars of pureed baby food in similar, paired colours. For example, one jar of green beans and one of peas, apple sauce and pears, and carrots and squash.

Number the lids from one to 12, then remove the labels, making sure to put the jar number on the back of the corresponding label. Keep the labels safe as you'll need them later for the answers.

Your guests' task is to have a good look at the baby food jars and guess what's in each one. No smelling or tasting allowed!

Ask everyone to write their answers on a piece of paper. Whoever gets the most correct answers wins.

Variation: do a taste-test version of the game and find out why babies make faces during meals! Check if any of your guests have food allergies if you're playing this version of the game.

2. How much did it cost?

Fill a basket with essential baby items and ask everyone to guess the cost of the entire basket of goodies.

You could make it more challenging and throw in things like infant paracetamol and nappy cream. This could be tricky for non-parents, as well as anyone who hasn't had to buy those items for a while.

Whoever's guess is closest wins a prize, and the parents-to-be take home the whole basket. It's a great way to give a large, thoughtful gift without breaking the bank.

3. Guess the girth

It's a good idea to check with the mum-to-be in advance that she's happy to play this game. If she's not embarrassed or worried about her weight, it's a great icebreaker.

All you need is one or two balls of string. Ask guests to cut a length of string that they think will stretch around the mum-to-be's belly.

Once everyone's had a turn, the mum-to-be measures and cuts a piece of string that actually fits around her bump. The guest whose piece of string is closest to hers wins. You may be surprised at how far off some people's estimates are!

Variation: use toilet tissue instead of string, and ask everyone to guess how many pieces will go round the mum-to-be's belly.

4. Baby picture match

Before the baby shower, ask your guests for pictures of themselves as babies. Arrange the photos on a board or wall and give each one a number.

Ask each guest to write down which grown-up matches which baby picture. It's an idea to give each guest a name tag if they don't know each other well. The person with the most correct answers wins.

5. Baby bag mystery game

Before the shower, collect as many paper bags as you can and number each one.

Put a baby item, such as a dummy, teething ring or nappy in each bag and tape it shut. Write down the answers as you go to keep track of what's in each numbered bag.

Pass the bags around so guests can guess what's inside by feeling it through the bag. Ask them to write down their answers. At the end of the shower, give them the answers.

Whoever gets the most right wins a prize, and the parents-to-be get to keep all the baby stuff.

6. Take a guess

Fill a baby bottle with jelly beans or other coloured sweets. Or put nappies in a large, clear container instead.

Make sure you keep count as you fill your bottle or container! Ask each guest to guess how many sweets are in the bottle or nappies in the container. The person who comes closest wins a prize.

7. What's that song?

Choose 10 nursery rhymes, lullabies or children's songs. Try to include a few less well-known rhymes and songs to keep the game challenging.

Once you've made your selection, choose a line from each, and write them on a piece of paper numbered one to 10.

Make enough copies of the list to go round and ask everyone to come up with the titles of as many of the lullabies, rhymes or songs as they can. Most people will need at least a few minutes!

Variation: play or sing the songs and ask everyone to guess the titles.
